Day-by-Day Itinerary
Meet your guides in Arusha or Moshi, then transfer to Machame Gate. Begin the trek through dense rainforest, alive with birds, butterflies, and occasional colobus monkeys. Enjoy your first views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes while walking along shaded trails. Evening at Machame Camp, dinner, and briefing for the days ahead.
Today you leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The landscape opens up, revealing dramatic vistas of the Shira Plateau. Encounter giant lobelias and senecias, and watch clouds roll across valleys far below. This gradual ascent helps with acclimatization, preparing your body for higher altitudes. Overnight at Shira Camp under a sky full of stars.
A challenging but rewarding day. Trek towards the Lava Tower for acclimatization, gaining altitude before descending slightly to Barranco Camp. Along the way, you’ll pass rocky valleys and alpine desert terrain. Spend time acclimatizing and taking in panoramic views before a restful night at Barranco Camp.
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a highlight of the Machame Route. The ascent is steep but very rewarding, offering expansive views across the southern glaciers and valleys. Descend into Karanga Valley, appreciating the quiet and stark beauty of high-altitude plains. Evening at Karanga Camp with a chance to watch a stunning sunset.
Trek through rocky alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. The landscape becomes more barren, with striking views of glaciers and ridges. Prepare gear, rest, and enjoy a light dinner before an early night for the midnight ascent.
Start around midnight with headlamps guiding your way through the icy summit zone. Reach Uhuru Peak in time for sunrise, witnessing an unforgettable panorama over Africa. After photos and celebration, begin the descent to Mweka Camp through moorland and rainforest. Overnight at Mweka Camp with a well-deserved rest.
Complete the final descent through forested trails to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your achievement with the crew before transferring back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
